Most enterprises today use Ethernet based LAN solutions. Invariably every one of them have the latest fast Ethernet solutions inside their LANs. While this is a norm today, it wasn’t that simple all way. The LAN technologies came a long way from earliest simple implementations towards the modern day high-speed solutions.
The first LAN implementations were depending on the same Ethernet concept but used a coaxial cable instead. The main backbone was obviously a high grade coaxial cable that was thick enough to increase enough to attach a handful of computers and enable them to communicate. Since the focus was more about connectivity compared to the speeds, an original LAN speeds were around 2 Mbps to 5 Mbps.
This transformed completely when coaxial cables were replaced by unshielded twisted pairs or even the UTP cables. These were more flexible across the corners which was obviously a big relief from the coaxial cables which didn’t bend well on the sharp corners. This really changed the way in which LAN networks were built and connected.
To complement the UTP cable the Ethernet LAN was now implemented with new devices called hubs. The hubs are similar towards the coaxial cables where there is a bus and all of ports around the devices are basically drops out of this bus. The benefit of hub though was that the computers could possibly be connected at the longer distance from the bus. There was no requirement to run the bus or coaxial cable through the entire rooms. It could possibly be in a central location and all of computers linked with it.
Both these evolutions occurred through a different standard known as the 10 BASE T. This was obviously a new flavour of the already popular Ethernet. This one extended the LAN to longer distance plus increased the speeds to 10 Mbps. Eventually together with the growing popularity hubs, new devices called switches arrived to the market. These allowed the typically half duplex LAN networks to be full duplex, doubling the capability.
With all of the LAN evolutions there were a new variety of bandwidth applications plus more computers started getting added in to the network. Now there was clearly need for an enhancement in bandwidth. This is where Fast Ethernet got standardized.
Today many enterprises have exclusively Fast Ethernet networks. The switches too evolved to back up fast Ethernet ports getting the benefits of high-speed with full duplex operations. This has truly changed the enterprise LAN landscape. Download LAN Speed Test 1.1.7 Software Free
